Survival Tips for Basketball Season {Keeping Little Ones Entertained in the Bleachers}

0

Basketball season is an exciting time, especially when my oldest son is on the court. But for his younger siblings (ages 6 and 2), sitting through an entire game in the bleachers can feel like an eternity to them.

Instead of dreading the sideline juggling act, consider these tips and tricks to keep your little ones entertained while still cheering on your favorite player.

Pack a Game Day Activity Bag

Prepare a special “game day bag” filled with quiet, engaging activities. Some great options include:

  • Coloring books and crayons
  • Sticker books
  • Magnetic drawing boards
  • Small puzzles or fidget toys

Rotate items each game to keep the bag exciting, and save it exclusively for basketball games to make it feel special.

Bring Snacks—Lots of Snacks

Hungry kids are cranky kids, so pack a variety of snacks that are easy to eat and mess-free. Think pretzels, apple slices, string cheese or granola bars. If you’re feeling festive, cut sandwiches into basketball shapes or pack orange-colored treats to match the theme.

Incorporate Basketball Fun

Help them feel connected to the game by making it interactive.

  • Game Bingo: Create a simple bingo card with things like “ref blows a whistle,” “three-pointer,” or “cheerleader pom-poms.”
  • Cheering Challenge: Give them a small pom-pom or foam finger and encourage them to cheer loudly when their sibling’s team scores.
  • Scorekeeper Assistant: If they’re old enough, let them help track the score on a small notepad.

Bring a Blanket or Pillow

Bleachers aren’t the most comfortable place to sit, especially for little ones. A cozy blanket or small pillow can make the experience more comfortable and may even encourage a younger child to rest during the game.

Use Technology Wisely

If all else fails, a tablet or phone can be a lifesaver. Download educational apps, games or kid-friendly shows ahead of time, and make it your back-up plan for when attention spans start to wane. Just remember headphones to keep the bleachers peaceful for other spectators.

Take Movement Breaks

Little kids have big energy, and expecting them to sit still for an entire game might be unrealistic. Look for opportunities to take a quick walk, head to the concession stand, or let them stretch their legs in a safe area nearby.

Celebrate Their Role as a Fan

Help younger siblings feel like part of the team by involving them in the pre-game excitement. Let them wear a mini jersey, hold a homemade sign, or pick out snacks for their basketball star. It’s a great way to keep them invested in the game and proud of their sibling.

With a little preparation and creativity, basketball season can be fun for the whole family – even the littlest fans in the bleachers. Keeping younger siblings entertained not only makes the experience more enjoyable for them but also lets you focus on cheering for your star player without the stress. Grab your bag, pack those snacks and get ready to conquer the bleachers this season.

Emily Bennett
Hi, mamas! I’m Emily, born and raised in Springfield, Ohio, and now raising my family in the Champion City. I’m married to my college sweetheart (he’s from Springfield, too, and we knew each other in high school, but we didn’t make it Facebook official until our freshman year at Ohio State). We’re proud parents of a precious yet oh-so-rotten baby boy, MJ (b. November 2016), and a fur baby named Bentley. Needless to say, I am the queen of our household! I work full-time as a PR pro for a marketing-communication agency and am always striving to find the perfect work-life balance. I’m a Joanna Gaines wannaba, lover of all things rose gold and a self-diagnosed Target addict… But c’mon, what mama isn’t?!
