There’s no better time than the summer season to gather the family and venture beyond the bustling city streets for a day at a nearby county fair. While the urban landscape of Cincinnati offers its own unique attractions, escaping to the countryside for a fair provides a refreshing change of pace and a treasure trove of experiences that are well worth the trip.
Here are a few compelling reasons to pack up the kids and head out to a county fair this summer.
A Hands-On Learning Experience
One of the greatest joys of visiting a county fair is the opportunity for children to learn about animals and agriculture firsthand. Unlike the zoo or classroom lessons, a county fair allows kids to get up close and personal with a variety of farm animals. They can witness milking demonstrations, watch sheep shearing, and even interact with baby animals in petting zoos. These experiences offer invaluable lessons about where our food comes from and the hard work that goes into farming, fostering a deeper appreciation for agriculture.
Fun for All Ages
County fairs are a hub of entertainment that caters to all age groups. From thrilling rides and carnival games to live music and entertainment shows, there’s something for everyone. Younger kids will delight in the gentle rides and whimsical games, while older children and adults can seek out more adventurous options like roller coasters and bumper cars. The joy of winning a stuffed animal or simply watching the smiles on your kids’ faces as they twirl around on a merry-go-round is priceless.
Indulge in Fair Food Delights
No trip to a county fair is complete without indulging in the mouth-watering array of fair food. From classic corn dogs and funnel cakes to more adventurous deep-fried treats, the culinary offerings are sure to please every palate. Many fairs also showcase local specialties and home-cooked meals that provide a delicious taste of the region’s culture. It’s a culinary adventure that adds to the overall festive atmosphere and leaves lasting memories.
If you’re looking for a fantastic fair experience, here’s a shameless plug. The Clark County Fair in Springfield is a must-visit. I grew up going to this fair every summer, showing animals through 4-H, and even met my husband through fair activities 17 years ago (we both served on the Clark County Junior Fair Board)! This year, the Clark County Fair runs July 19-26 and is just a little over an hour’s drive from Cincinnati, and is one of the best county fairs in the state in my book. Ultimately, a trip to a county fair is about more than just individual activities. It’s about creating lasting memories together as a family. The shared experiences of discovering new things, laughing together on rides, and enjoying delicious food in the open air are the moments that bond us and become cherished stories to tell for years to come.
