Bittersweet Kindergarten Beginnings

As a mom, few milestones are as bittersweet as sending your child off to kindergarten. This year, I’m experiencing this mix of emotions with my middle child and only daughter. Watching her step into this new chapter of her life fills me with pride, excitement and a touch of anxiety. It’s a moment that signifies her growing independence, and while I’m thrilled to see her blossom, I can’t help but feel a twinge of sadness as she takes this big step away from the safety and comfort of home.

The anticipation leading up to her first day of kindergarten has been a rollercoaster.

On one hand, I’m excited for the new experiences and friendships she will make. I’ve seen her eyes light up at the mention of learning new things, and I know she’s ready to take on the world. On the other hand, there’s a part of me that wants to hold on a little longer to the moments of her being my little girl. The quiet afternoons of reading stories together, the spontaneous dance parties in the living room, and the countless hugs and kisses throughout the day will now be shared with the world.

I know it’s natural to feel anxious about this transition. Will she make friends? Will she adjust well to the structured environment even with two years of preschool under her belt? Will she miss me as much as I will miss her? These questions swirl in my mind, but I remind myself that this is a natural step in her growth.

Here are a few tips that have helped us prepare for this big transition:

  1. Visit the School Together: Familiarize your child with the new environment. Many schools offer orientation days where you can meet the teachers, see the classrooms and even play on the playground. This helps reduce the fear of the unknown. Luckily, my daughter will continue going to the same school where she attended preschool and where her big brother is entering 2nd grade.
  2. Establish a Routine: Start implementing a school-day routine a few weeks before school starts. This includes regular bedtimes, waking up at the same time and practicing getting ready in the morning. This will make the actual transition smoother.
  3. Talk About It: Have open conversations about what kindergarten will be like. Read books about starting school and discuss any fears or questions your child might have. Reassure them that it’s okay to feel nervous and excited at the same time.
  4. Create a Goodbye Ritual: Develop a special way to say goodbye each morning, whether it’s a secret handshake, a special hug or a little note in their lunchbox. This ritual can provide comfort and consistency.
  5. Stay Positive: Children often take cues from their parents. If you show excitement and confidence about this new adventure, your child is more likely to feel the same way. Focus on the positive aspects and the fun they’ll have.

As I prepare to send my daughter off to kindergarten, I’m learning to embrace this change as an opportunity for both of us to grow. While she’s learning about letters and numbers, I’m learning to let go and trust in her resilience. The journey ahead is full of new adventures, and while the initial goodbye may be tough, the joy of watching her thrive is a reward beyond measure.

Here’s to all the moms navigating this transition. May we find strength in each other and cherish these precious, bittersweet moments as our little ones take their first big steps into the world.

Emily Bennett
Hi, mamas! I’m Emily, born and raised in Springfield, Ohio, and now raising my family in the Champion City. I’m married to my college sweetheart (he’s from Springfield, too, and we knew each other in high school, but we didn’t make it Facebook official until our freshman year at Ohio State). We’re proud parents of a precious yet oh-so-rotten baby boy, MJ (b. November 2016), and a fur baby named Bentley. Needless to say, I am the queen of our household! I work full-time as a PR pro for a marketing-communication agency and am always striving to find the perfect work-life balance. I’m a Joanna Gaines wannaba, lover of all things rose gold and a self-diagnosed Target addict… But c’mon, what mama isn’t?!
