For fellow lovers of all things avocado, having a go-to recipe for guacamole is a must.
It wasn’t until I met my husband that I delved into more Mexican cooking. The blending of our two backgrounds has made for lots of culinary wins in the kitchen, and the fact that my father-in-law compliments my guac skills is an award-winning nod for sure!
Yes, this recipe is truly award-winning. When my nephew asked to use it for a Guacamole-Making Contest in his Global Gourmet class, I was so excited to learn his group won! So, I’ll tack on that award-winning label!
The real beauty lies in the fresh ingredients and how easy they are to combine into a mouth-watering treat!
The Flavor-ized Ingredients List
4 avocados (pits reserved)
2 roma tomatoes chopped
¼ medium white onion chopped
¼ cup cilantro chopped
1 lime for juicing
Salt & Seminole Swamp Seasoning to taste
Directions
Pit and peel avocados; reserving the pits for later use. An avocado peeler is a perfect tool for this and helps to break the avocado into the right size/consistency. Chop tomatoes and onions, and stir into chunked avocado. Finely chop cilantro and add. Juice 1 lime and stir liquid into mixture. Add salt and Swamp Seasoning (a flavorful seasoning blend of choice could also be substituted) to taste. ENJOY!
So much of guac making comes down to personal taste. More or less of the lime, salt, seasoning, and cilantro can be added to achieve individualized flavor. This recipe can also be easily doubled, tripled, quadrupled, etc. depending on the amount needed and/or the avocado love level of the group being served!
Guacamole Prep Tips
- No matter what the recipe may be, having ripe avocados is rule number one. Seeing as this is the key ingredient, it really makes or breaks the final product. Choose avocados that have a slight softness, and double check by popping out the stem. If it reveals a yellowish color, it’s a good find. True green or brown should be a pass.
- Chill onions for less tears in the chopping.
- Reserve the avocado pits and place 2-3 into the mixture to help deter browning.
- Serve soon after prep as the potential to brown does not allow for a wide prep-to-serve window, but it can be chilled for up to 3 hours before serving.
Guacamole Serving Ideas
- Use as a dip with tortilla chips. El Milagro is a favorite in our household.
- Offer as a side when serving hard or soft tacos, quesadillas, salads, etc.
- Spread on whole-grain toast for a tasty and nutritional breakfast or lunch option.
- Move over mayo! Add guac to burgers, grilled cheese sandwiches, etc.
While I may not be touting an actual trophy, I do love the smiles and foodie-eye-closed moments (You know what I’m talking about!) that accompany a scoop of my guacamole. It really is a quick-and-easy recipe that packs some great nutritional perks along with amazing flavor!
