5 Things That Won’t Surprise You When Your Toddler is Obsessed With Abraham Lincoln

abe obsessionLate last summer we took a quick family trip to Washington, DC. We were there less than 72 hours. But we saw it all. And it was great. Obviously, the trip was more for our older 2 kids, 11 and 7. But Miss (then almost) 3 year old was along for the ride. One thing we didn’t count on in our millions of steps traveled all over Washington, DC was her having a weird and probably unhealthy obsession with Abraham Lincoln.

I would also like to mention that during the Ranger Talk at Ford Theater, said almost 3 year old was all over the place, crawling all over my husband and I. Yet, the next day while touring the Washington Monument, I heard her mumbling Abe’s assassination story to herself. Almost 9 months later, Abraham Lincoln is still a topic of conversation daily.

So here are 5 things that won’t surprise you when your toddler is obsessed with Abraham Lincoln:

  1. A trip to the pediatrician includes a lengthy explanation about why your toddler is afraid of getting a shot. Because she doesn’t want to die on the pillow, obviously.
  2. Attending a funeral will include a conversation with your toddler along the lines of… toddler: “mommy, did so-and-so’s mom get shot like Abraham Lincoln too?” mom: “no honey, not everyone gets shot.”
  3. Your toddler will recognize a tiny picture of Abraham Lincoln in a random book about Pennsylvania your 2nd grader brings home from school.
  4. Your toddler will want to inspect every dollar bill in your wallet, to see if it is the “Abraham Lincoln dollar”. You will learn to pass every dollar bill to her for inspection before spending. Or tears.
  5. A trip to the library will require looking through all of the Abraham Lincoln books. Every time.
