Just Wave {Unspoken School Drop-Off Etiquette}

When did we stop waving?

School drop-off is part of many of our lives.

I figure that asking my kids to behave during the entire school day is enough, so why add the extra time and opportunities for my kids to act like fools and put them on the bus before and after school?

So we partake in the school drop-off and pick-up. Our drop-off and pick-up are amazing, except for the lack of waves.

It might be gratitude, or it might be politeness; I’m not sure which, but I’m salty about it.

We have several drop-off locations and the kids exit to the right when you get to their grade drop-off. We are a two-stop family because we have kids in separate grades. We pull to the right, drop off our son, merge to the left and WAVE, and then cruise down the road behind our school and slink into the drop-off line for Kindergarten.

Said offense happens here.

After drop-off, I merge to the left and as a sweet soul lets me in, I WAVE. It is not hard, I wave as a way to say, “Hey, THANKS for letting me merge and get on with my day.” A little gesture that is so nice and costs nothing… a little wave.

Since I do drop-off most mornings, I have had many hours to sit and stew about this.

I think I learned this in Driver’s Education, and I think that may be the only thing I taught my older kids when we did in-car driver’s training. Wave, it shows you acknowledge the other driver and are appreciative that they let you merge. It is just a wave people.

WHY DOES NO ONE ELSE WAVE? Is it no longer a thing, am I late to the party that we quit doing this? I do it on the highway, I do it in town and I do it at the school drop-off.

I’m not going to stop, I’m going to give a little wave. It costs me nothing, or you either.

JUST WAVE.

Hey local mommas! I grew up in Centerville, but I now live in Wilmington with my husband Tony. Together we have 6 kids, Joe, and his wife Allison, Austin, and his wife Hannah, Sydney and her husband Hayden, Andrew and his wife Lauren and our littles, Max and Eli. Did I mention we are a little nuts starting over with this parenting thing when we are 45+? We are officially adding new titles to our names in 2022- Tiki and Jeep (our version of Grandma and Grandpa). My husband and I are both ministers, and we get to work together in a local church. We were both married before and brought our families together in 2010. After a few years of marriage we felt God's leading for us to adopt. We added Max to our family in 2014 and Eli joined us in 2017, our quiver is officially full! Blending our family has been an adventure! Add some ex-spouses and two birth mommas and we have ourselves a crazy crew! Coffee is my love language. The beach is my happy place and I long to have my toes in the sand.
