Oatmeal Options for the Entire Family to Enjoy #CMBOats

As the weather cools down, I look for heartier options for my family for breakfast. Cold cereal just doesn’t cut it when the air “stings the toes and bites the nose”.

One of my favorite breakfasts is steel-cut oats with a variety of fruits, nuts, seeds, and spices to make the breakfast of champions even more worthy of praise. I wanted to share this meal with you for the cooler months ahead. Depending on how you prepare–and serve–the oats, they are good for you, just don’t overdo it (which I’ve been known to do). Furthermore, this breakfast can be as easy as you make it. The oats are usually done in fewer than 15 minutes–from cold water to ready-to-serve oats.

Depending on the look you’re going for, you can put all of your oatmeal “toppings” in cute little dishes, or you can just sit them on the table or countertop in their packaging… easy peasy.

I always use Bob’s Red Mill Steel Cut Oats. They are, by far, the tastiest that I have tried; but I’m open to suggestions if you have any! They also offer an officially gluten-free option, too!

Typically, I set out all the fixin’s for this breakfast, but sometimes I limit it to a certain “theme”.

Basic Oatmeal

When I was little my mom just threw butter and brown sugar on my oatmeal. Eating oats this way is still one of the most comforting meals around. It was actually the first thing my daughter asked for after her appendectomy this summer. And when she did… I wanted some, too.

Apple Cinnamon

There really isn’t much to explain with this little treasure. I cut the apple into fourths and distribute into each bowl, and add honey and cinnamon to taste.

I simply use one of these beautiful contraptions to peel, core, and slice my apples into spirals.

The Works

One of the best things about making an oatmeal bar is that everyone adds whatever they like to their own bowl of oats. Below you will find a list of the goodness that goes into making my favorite dish, but also the joy in knowing that, while my kids may not add all of it, yet, they at least have the option.

And yes, it is basically eating trail mix with my oats… and I’m okay with that:

  • Fresh fruit (you can go with seasonal, obviously local is best; but sometimes I just can’t help but buy those strawberries. Bananas and blueberries are great, too.)
  • Dried cranberries or raisins
  • Nuts–I prefer chopped walnuts (I buy these in bulk, put them in a baggie, and let the kids whack ’em)
  • Seeds–chia seeds, ground flax seed, pumpkin seeds, and sunflower seeds
  • Honey, raw and local is the best… and better than sugar
  • Spices–I use cinnamon because I’m comfortable with it; but you can use all sorts of spices to add flavor

Be sure to comment with any other suggestions you may have for me. I’m always looking for more recipes to feed my family of six.
