Makeup is for Mommies

MakeUpI have a confession to make:: I LOVE Makeup.

Lipstick, eye shadow, blush, mascara, you name it, it’s in my makeup drawer. Using makeup makes me feel pretty! My relationship with makeup has definitely changed since having children, just as every other relationship has. Some days there is not enough time to wash your face let alone put makeup on it. Other days you plan to doll yourself up a bit only to get side tracked by an argument with your four year-old daughter over wearing lip gloss. “But Mommy, wearing lip gloss makes me beautiful!” is often the phrase spoken through tear-filled banter.

Naturally daughters inherit and learn lots of “loves” from their mothers which is a very honorable thing. I could go on and on about the things that I have loved and learned from my mother, and I am so very thankful for that! I was just not prepared to have this type of fight until my own daughter was a teenager. Who was I kidding?

Was this my doing because makeup is a must-have in my routine? She watches me put makeup on every day. Of course she is going to want to wear some (every single day), just like me. Like mother, like daughter?

Heart-warming and terrifying at the same time.

I also might add that she is quick to compliment someone that has on sparkly purple eye shadow or hot pink lipstick. As a mom, I am a sucker for compliments and pretty darn impressed that I have such an observant, well-mannered little makeup artist on my hands.

On a serious note, (I feel) girls need to understand that beauty is found on the inside as well as the outside. I think it is time to start teaching her now. It is extremely important to me as a parent, to make sure that my daughter grows up knowing the true meaning of beauty. It may be hard to explain to such a young lady, but smiling, practicing good manners, being honest, and being a great friend are a few simple things we have started talking about.

I am proud that she is quick to help someone in need, and willing to share her last bite of ice cream with her little sister. Beautiful things happen every day, not just when she dresses up like her favorite princess or puts on her shiny pink lip gloss.

After all, makeup is for mommies and four year olds are beautiful just the way they are!
