2015 Fall Bucket List

1

FallIt’s Fall, everybody! Or it will be very soon (September 23rd). The wide-open skies are beautiful blue and the harvest moon is awe inspiring. It’s my favorite time of year and a VERY busy time of year for most of us. Kids have started back to school, fall sports are encroaching on our evenings and weekends, and there are bountiful events all over our great city. I’ll admit that Fall weekends leave me exhausted on Monday mornings. There are so many fun things to do, and I have a really hard time saying no to getting out in the crisp, fresh air.

My Fall Bucket List is ambitious, but with the help of some caffeinated beverages, comfortable shoes, and good weather (fingers crossed), it should be doable.

Without further adieu, I give you my Fall Bucket List for 2015!

  • Load my son into the car and take the self-guided Kenton County Farm Harvest Tour (Sept. 19)
  • Get costumed up and spend the day at HallZOOween at the Cincinnati Zoo and Botanical Gardens (Saturday/Sundays: Oct. 3–25)
  • Go hoarse screaming at The Dent School House (Sept. 11 – Nov. 7)
  • Dance with Snoopy and the Peanuts gang at Snoopy’s Halloween Party at Kings Island (Saturdays/Sundays: Oct. 3 – Nov. 1)

  • Ride a train with my five-year-old son in Metamora, IN during the Canal Days Festival (Oct. 2-4)
  • Quite possibly give my son nightmares for weeks by taking him to the Haunted Village (Fridays/Saturdays: Oct. 9-24)
  • Take in the beauty and splendor of Balluminaria (Nov. 22)
  • Make my way to Mt. Adams to see The Secret Garden at Playhouse in the Park (Now through Oct. 3)
  • Visit a pumpkin patch, get lost in a corn maze, and take a hay ride

  • Celebrate Great Outdoor Weekend (Sept. 26- 27) by going for a hike, checking out some toads, and collecting some fall items for an art project at the Cincinnati Nature Center
  • Listen to Thriller (for me) and watch the Monster Mash music video with my son
  • Get up to Trader Joe’s for some seasonal pumpkin granola
  • Watch Hocus Pocus with my son (It will be my first time too.)
  • Go back in time for a day at the Ohio Renaissance Festival (Saturdays/Sundays: Now through Oct. 25)

  • Make some homemade pumpkin bread (with canned pumpkin. I’m no Martha Stewart.)
  • Get a glimpse of Halloweens of olde at the Taft Museum’s Antique Halloween exhibit (Sept. 18 – Nov. 1)
  • Get over to Cincinnati Museum Center to play in the tree house and check out The Art of the Brick exhibit (Opening Oct. 23)
  • Take my son to Music Hall for the first Lollipops Family Concert of the season: Symphony Spooktacular! (Oct. 31)
  • Carve a pumpkin (I usually only paint them.)

  • Go to Hyde Park Farmer’s Market to stock up on some goat milk soap and, hopefully, snag a loaf of Blue Oven Bread (Sundays through Oct. 25)
  • Head down to Big Bone Lick State Park and check out some Bison
  • Take in the Madcap Puppet’s rendition of Legend of Sleepy Hollow (Various show times and locations)
  • Read something chilling like Stephen King’s Carrie; and for my son, something seasonal and funny: Turkey Trouble by Wendi J. Silvano

Well, that’s my list of autumnal aspirations.

What do you have planned for these sunny days and cool nights?

I am a native Cincinnatian, born and raised on the West Side and currently settled across the river in Northern Kentucky. I’m a former Highlander, Bearcat, Falcon, and Fulbright Scholar. My greatest challenge hitherto is the one I love the most: being a Mom to an energetic eight-year-old boy. When not working full-time at one of the city’s great hospitals, I’m trying to fit in all there is to do in this wonderful city – and there is certainly A LOT to do! As one who loves to read, I am an advocate for the public library and go multiple times a week. You can often find me at Music Hall enjoying the ballet, opera, and orchestra. I am an introvert, a bit of a foodie, an NPR listener, a pessimist who likes to think she’s a realist, a middle child, an ex-wife and amicable co-parent, a fiancée, and much, much more. I feel lucky to have grown up in Cincinnati and to be raising my own child in this wonderful city.
