TCT presents The SpongeBob Musical: Youth Edition at the Taft Theatre this month. Plunge into this stunning all-singing, all-dancing, dynamic stage show! When the citizens of Bikini Bottom discover that a volcano will soon erupt and destroy their humble home, SpongeBob and his friends must come together to save the fate of their undersea world. With lives hanging in the balance and all hope lost, a most unexpected hero rises up. The power of optimism really can save the world! The SpongeBob Musical is based on the beloved animated series created by Stephen Hillenburg. We got a first glance on opening day of the show’s run to give you all the best tips and inside info, so you can get your tickets and enjoy the show.

The Children’s Theatre of Cincinnati is thrilled to announce that Cincinnati Reds‘ First Baseman, Joey Votto, will lend his voice to this production! Votto will be heard as the “French Narrator” in the show, introducing the audience to the world of Bikini Bottom. This marks the first time a Cincinnati Reds player has been featured at TCT. Please note :: Joey Votto will not appear live at the Taft Theatre. Only his voice recording is being used.

Ideal for ages 4+. This production runs 60 minutes without an intermission.

When walking into the Taft, you could see how excited everyone was for the first show of the season – kids and parents alike! There is a spotlight raffle going on during the performances. There are some super awesome toys getting raffled off! Winners will be chosen the Sunday after their final show. They also had The BonBonerie Fine Pastries there, which are always amazing. They theme the cookies to match the show and had pineapples, pink stars, and burgers (aka Krabby Patties) available.

We got our Crown Club treats (including a Joey Votto poster!) when we first walked in. There are signs next to the merchandise table directing to the pick-up for the special goodies club members receive before the show. Remember that Crown Club members and season pass-holders get to stay after the show for autographs (we got to meet SpongeBob himself this time!). Crown Club and season passes are still available, so sign your kids up today for a season full of bonus fun.

TCT productions are first-class all the way. This is theatre for kids but not by kids! These are some of the most talented professional actors, singers, and dancers from our city that are in these shows. Ian Timothy Forsgren (Electric Skate/Ensemble) was absolutely hilarious, and Brandi La’Sherrill (Mayor of Bikini Bottom) was perfection. It was fun to see Bob Herzog’s entertaining self on stage as Sheldon J. Plankton. Kristen Das (Pearl Krabs) is one to watch; her vocal skills blew me away. Even though the actors were not in full masks, this show was an immersive experience. We were all so impressed by how the voices were done just like in the TV show – great job, Josh Galloway (SpongeBob SquarePants), Aaron Marshall (Patrick Star), Henry Howland (Squidward Tentacles), and the rest.

TCT outdid themselves once again with the set design. The audience is transported under the sea with life size versions of SpongeBob’s and Squidward’s houses for one example. You have to see it for yourself. Their costume designers did their thing as well. My favorite was Sandy Cheeks, the squirrel! I really want to have one of those made for me for Halloween this year!!! I already can’t wait to see the sets of the other three shows this season.

James, son of CMC Contributor, Andrea, is almost 4 and said he loved it! It was his very first TCT show, and he did so well the whole time we were there. We just love that it’s a judgement-free zone where young kids can learn theatre etiquette in a safe place and get introduced to the theatre early. Whatever your age, you don’t want to miss this production. The Taft Theatre is located at 5th and Sycamore Streets in Downtown Cincinnati. Tickets for The SpongeBob Musical start at just $10.
